Global Health: Interprofessional Perspectives will receive $10,000 annually for two years. Contributing faculty includes Shailvi Gupta, MD MPH FACS, Lynn Michalopoulos, MSW, PhD, Matiangai Sirleaf, MA, JD, Charlotte Nwogwugwu, DrPH, BSN, RN, HIV PCP, CPH-BC, Emily Heil, PharmD, MS, FIDP, BCIDP, AAHIVP, Carlos Faerron Guzman, MD, and Angela Jachelski, Clinical Instructor. The interprofessional course “Global Health: Interprofessional Perspectives” brings together students from multiple disciplines to collaboratively address complex global health challenges. In its most recent offering, 35 students from five UMB schools participated in highly engaged, interdisciplinary learning, including a final case presentation seminar and an interprofessional book club focused on street-connected children in Zambia. These activities demonstrated robust integration of diverse professional perspectives and meaningful student engagement. The lecture series had speakers across many disciplines including schools of law, pharmacy, nursing, medicine and social work. Sustaining support will expand participation, enhance interprofessional experiences, and support student-led global health initiatives. Accessing Dental Care Services for UMB’s Neighbors through an Interprofessional Team-Based Approach will receive $10,000 annually for 2 years. Contributing faculty include Lisa D'Affronte, D.D.S., Liss Bress, RDH, MS, , Kelly Doran, PhD, RN, FAAN, Thomas Oates, D.M.D .PhD, and Deborah Rodriquez, RDH, DDS, FAGD. The proposed project is designed to improve interprofessional education, collaboration and practice by raising awareness for the barriers to dental care for uninsured and underinsured community members. Access to dental care barriers will be addressed through a team-based approach that includes training, collaborative education and information gathering sessions as well as case management strategies with nursing supports to reduce barriers to accessing and maintaining access to dental services. To learn more, please contact Dr. D’Affronte at ldaffronte@umaryland.edu.
The Social Work in Special Care and Geriatrics received $10,000. The contributing Faculty are Sydnee Chavis, DMD, MS, Everett Smith, LMSW, Madge Henderson, LCSW-C , Laura Loessner, LICSW, and Adila Baig, DDS. This project established the Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic as a practicum rotation site for social work students. As such, the Seed Grant project supported a School of Social Work faculty member to supervise a social work practicum student and collaborate with School of Dentistry faculty and dental students for comprehensive direct patient care. Adults with disabilities face significant disparities in access to care as well as healthcare outcomes, and this collaboration has helped to improve patient access to care as well as care outcomes by coordinating interprofessional treatment needs between social work and oral health providers. IPE Curriculum in the Foundations of Psychedelic Science and Therapeutics will receive 20,000 for two years. Contributing faculty and staff members are Megan Meyer, MSW, PhD, Andrew Coop, PhD, Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, MS, John G. Cagle, MSW, PhD, Shannon Tucker, Lynn, PhD, MS, CPHIMS, and Seante Hatcher, MSW. A growing body of research is demonstrating the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and pain. UMB’s first response to this emerging science on PAT has been the 2024-25 Continuing Interprofessional Education (CIPE - see Owen & Schmitt, 2013) workshop series titled, Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Science and Practice of Psychedelic Therapies, (see the website created for this: ), which was supported by the IPE Center though it’s seed grant program and has been a terrific success. Six of eight sessions have been offered thus far and have had very strong enrollment (over 60 participants in each) and positive evaluations, and attendees have expressed interest in further training. We have three primary aims over the next two years to continue and expand our IPE workforce training efforts in this emerging area of practice. We aim to develop and deliver a 3-credit IPE elective course available to students from the schools of social work (SSW), pharmacy (SOPH) and nursing (SON) (additional approval from other schools on campus will also be sought). In future years, this course could form the foundation of a possible micro-credential for both UMB and non-UMB members. To maximize student access, the 3-credit course will be asynchronous and taught collaboratively by faculty across the three schools.
