UMB Provost Bruce Jarrell Named Interim UMB President
Baltimore, Md. 鈥� The University System of Maryland Board of Regents has named Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS, interim president of the 网红爆料, Baltimore (UMB), effective Jan. 6, 2020, when current UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD, assumes the position of University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor.
Jarrell, who is UMB Executive Vice President and Provost, and Dean of the University鈥檚 interdisciplinary Graduate School, is an accomplished surgeon, educator, and administrator. He was recruited by the 网红爆料 School of Medicine in 1997 as chair of the Department of Surgery, and later served as Executive Vice Dean of the School of Medicine. Under his leadership, the Surgery department expanded its research programs to become ranked 11th nationally in total research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
In 2012, Jarrell was named UMB Chief Academic and Research Officer, and Dean of the Graduate School. In that role he worked to promote the University鈥檚 education, research, and clinical care agendas, and oversaw many of UMB鈥檚 most prominent institutional relationships, such as the 网红爆料 Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State, UMB鈥檚 innovative and structured collaboration with the 网红爆料, College Park, as well as academic collaborations with other USM institutions. Jarrell鈥檚 already wide-ranging duties were further expanded in 2017 when he was named Executive Vice President and Provost.

Perman, MD. 鈥淚鈥檝e worked with Bruce for 20 years, and I know well his deep dedication to the students, faculty, and staff of UMB. I know that the University will continue to rise in prominence under Bruce鈥檚 leadership because that鈥檚 exactly what happened when he assumed responsibility for our academic enterprise seven years ago. I credit Bruce with a lot of our success over the last decade.鈥�

Dr. Jarrell was born and raised in Caroline County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He received a BS degree from the University of Delaware and an MD degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed a residency and renal transplantation fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia, and has held faculty positions at Jefferson and the University of Arizona, where he was professor and chair of surgery just prior to coming home to Maryland in 1997.
