Fully vaccinated individuals are at much lower risk of contracting a Covid infection. However, the Delta variant has alarmingly been observed to rapidly increase in the U.S. and world-wide. The Delta variant virus is now the leading cause of new Covid infection cases in the U.S. So, for areas that are experiencing high transmission rates (driven primarily because these areas have majority populations that are not vaccinated), there is concern for the vaccinated to get the infection. Let me be clear that fully vaccinated individuals will still be at much lower risk than the unvaccinated. So, there is the consideration to re-apply the recommendation for universal masking for the indoors setting to further improve protection for the population—this is intended to improve compliance with mask wearing for the unvaccinated. So, despite your family being fully vaccinated (KUDOS to you!), you may want to be selective with the types of spaces and entertainment that you plan to enjoy together. For example, continue to consider outdoor dining options over indoor dining. Consider less crowded public venues compared to crowded venues. Limit your meeting together with other groups of people to fewer rather than larger groups.
Updated CDC guidance will continue to be provided as the pandemic progresses. The CDC is going to announce updated recommendations and is expected to recommend a return to universal masking when indoors, even for the fully vaccinated.
