The vaccines were developed quickly not because of skipping any safety reviews but because there have been a few decades of research on the vaccine technologies before COVID (e.g., vaccines using this technology have been developed as part of responding to ebola, zika, and other outbreaks). Also, the government made large investments that removed the normal delays and barriers in vaccine development (i.e., the up-front investments removed financial risk decision making from delaying the COVID vaccine development). The CDC and FDA continue to be closely monitoring the safety of all the COVID vaccines and have not found any troubling safety signals; instead the CDC continues to observe very high efficacy with these vaccines.
