I just read about a new Covid variant that is spreading around the world and coming to the US. Are the symptoms bad? Is this something I should get a vaccine for this Fall?

The WHO, CDC, and other public health authorities are monitoring the NB.1.8.1 variant. This variant was recently detected in the U.S. and has been responsible for an uptick of cases and hospitalizations in Asia and the Western Pacific throughout this past winter. The illnesses are not more severe than prior circulating variants, but the NB.1.8.1 variant could fuel a U.S. summer time surge of infections.

Currently, there are about 200 deaths per week due to Covid, so the effects of the virus has not disappeared. If a person is older and/or has multiple medical conditions, then getting a Covid infection can be more severe and could result in hospitalizations and death. If the vaccine is available to you this fall, then I would advise that you seek it.
