I was just in New York and rode the crowded subways and walked the busy streets for two days. Is Covid impacting many people at this time? Do we have some form of immunity among these crowds of people?

Most states and municipalities across the U.S. have significantly decreased their testing for SARS-CoV-2 so the transmission levels of the virus are not under as strict surveillance as in prior years.  Nonetheless, national data demonstrates that hospitalization and deaths are at a “low”. CDC data tracker.   In the state of New York, cases are at a low.  In New York City, cases are also relatively low.  However, right now NYC is experiencing an average of 177 daily cases, 13 daily hospitalizations, and 1 daily death; and right now the national estimates are 6,406 new hospitalizations and 779 deaths in a week. So, the “low” may be interpreted by some people as still a significant amount of hospitalizations and deaths; these hospitalizations and deaths are predominantly among older adults (age 75 years and older) and those who have not been vaccinated. Immunity that you can depend upon is the immunity from getting vaccinated.
