Very early in the Pandemic I had Covid19. I lost my sense of smell for about 4 months. Smelling came back. On September 1, 2023 I lost it again. Halve. fresh potatoes in my kitchen in a basket. Picked up one, I half of it was soft, rotten. I could not smell this mess. My neighbor came, I opened the door, she reeled backward and said OH< YEAH.Some smell, like vinegar is back. However, i smelled eucalyptus oil. Peppermint oil, it smells neutral but not like what it should smell like. My doctor said this just shows us what we dont know about COVID19. Help?

The loss of smell indicates damage to the olfactory nerves, which are responsible for the sense of smell. Although you had recovery after a prolonged period of 4 months from your initial infection, there may have been some permanent damage to the olfactory nerves.  I do not know how long or whether you will regain your sense of smell after this second insult.  I recommend you try and contact researchers of “long Covid” who may be able to provide you with information or enrollment in studies to help us better understand these significant consequences.
