Two of my friends, who are a couple, just got over Covid 19 and both tested negative about two weeks ago. They have a dog. If I visit them should I avoid contact with their dog because of the possibility it could contract and transmit the disease? I assume they would have to take their dog to a vet to have it tested if I wanted to make sure.

Yes, it is possible that dogs can get Covid infections, but the risk is very rare. Your friends should monitor the dog for signs of illness and contact the veterinarian for further instructions should there be symptoms of illness. Veterinarians can test dogs and cats for the virus.  Pets that are confirmed to be infected (or even suspected) should have a period of quarantine.
