My dad wants me to visit him 30 days after he got his first covid symptoms. I would be staying in his small house with him for 48 hours and sharing meals. Right now he is on day 11 and he's still pretty sick though I don't think he's in danger -- it's like a bad cold plus lots of fatigue. He is fully vaccinated, 71 years old, diabetic, and not in great health. Also he is a very loud talker. I am fully vaccinated but at fairly high risk from covid, and I'll be seeing people who are at much higher risk after this visit. Is seeing him a bad idea? Should we base the decision on how he's feeling at the time? Thanks for your help.

I would feel confident to visit your dad at 30 days from when he first had the Covid infection/symptoms. Some symptoms may linger for a long period of time (i.e., long Covid) but that does not mean that viruses are present. If you have any worries or concerns, you should always feel comfortable to mask up.  For example, if you dad is an “energetic” talker and commonly projects micro-spittle while talking loud, then even if it’s not infectious it’s still an “eww” factor.  That might be enough for me to say, “okay mask up dad, please!”
