How will I know if it is safe to go to the dentist for a non-emergency procedure, such as a routine check-up?

Thank you for this important and timely question. It is safe to go to the dentist for a non-emergency procedure but we each have an important role to play to minimize any possible risk. First, in the State of Maryland each dental practice is required to submit to the Maryland Department of Health a Certification of Compliance that all of the conditions required for resumption of elective and non-urgent procedures have been met prior to resuming operations. A copy of the certification should be posted prominently in a place that you should easily see. In addition, the CDC has provided guidance and recommendations for dental practices to follow for resuming non-emergency dental care during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a patient, you should feel comfortable asking to see to the Certification of Compliance and asking the practitioner for assurance that guidelines and recommendations have been followed.

Patients also have an important role in helping to minimize any possible risk. If you are not feeling well please stay home, inform the practice and make contact with your health provider. When you do visit a dental office please remember to closely follow office protocols and procedures, practice good hand hygiene, wear a mask and practice social distancing.
