I tried to Google this and got answers to different questions about people gathered or food service employees. Is food left out at work safe or can it spread Covid-19? Example: I walk into the lunch room. There are no people present. There is a plate of cookies left out for anyone who wants one. I don't know who might have touched the cookies, or heaven forbid, coughed in the room. All I know is there is a plate of cookies. Can I catch Covid by eating one of the cookies?

The evolving science clearly implicates that the primary mode of transmission of Covid is through the air and not from contact with surfaces. I think it is safe for you to take a cookie, as long as you know you are among respectful coworkers who have not coughed upon the cookies!  However, the lesson is where you choose to eat the cookie. We have learned that the break room, lunch room, etc. or any common space where many people congregate over time and have poor ventilation are the places where viral infections occur—through inhaling other people’s exhaled breath.  So, do not remove your mask in the lunch room to eat the cookie! I frankly believe that eating in the lunch room (breakroom, etc.) should not be allowed for the next few weeks while we are experiencing this sharp tremendous rise in delta and omicron viral infections.
