For longer than I've been alive, presidential elections have involved a 'ticket' consisting of a candidate for president and a candidate for vice-president. This does not seem to square with Article 12 of the Constitution. Can you explain how this is constitutional?
The Twelfth Amendment declares that members of the Electoral College shall vote separately for president and vice-president. Parties are permitted to run tickets, where voters just vote for the ticket. But if I am an elector pledged to vote for the Smith-Jones ticket, I first vote for Smith when the electoral college meets, and then Jones.
