I was surprised that the Supreme Court voted unanimously to bar states from independently deciding if Mr. Trump should be on their ballots. Are unanimous votes rare? Did the justices essentially point at the Congress and say its their call, not the states or SCOTUS?

Traditionally, almost half the Supreme Court cases are unanimous.  Typically, however, they are matters of less concern.  But US v. Nixon was unanimous.  The justices do appear to be claiming that only Congress can disqualify federal officers and under restrictive conditions at that.
