Mr. Trump may run for president when he is indicted. He may run for president when convicted, with a caveat below. Eugene Debs ran for president in 1920 while in prison and received about one million votes. Had he won, he could have served.
The caveat is that Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment forbids a person who once held state or federal office from again holding state or federal office if they participate in an insurrection against the United States. If Congress or a court finds that President Trump participated in an insurrection against the United States, he would be disqualified from holding office. For some details, see:
