My parents are in their mid-80s, and I live 200 miles from them.Ìý Last week there was a serious heatwave, and when I talked with them, they seemed totally wiped out.Ìý They had left their airconditioned house only once during the day to grocery shop, but it seemed to really drain them.Ìý Are elderly folks significantly more susceptible to heat exhaustion?Ìý Are there recommendations I can send to them to help them plan and act safely in the heat?

Yes, older adults are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat and its health consequences. Staying cool and hydrated are key to staying safe during hot weather. It is important to recognize the signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and muscle cramps seek medical attention immediately if experiencing any of them.
