My dad is 82 and his vision was getting worse for the past year. He just went to the doctor and they determined he as macular degeneration. The dry kind. Are there any treatments or things we can do to help preserve his sight? He lives with my mom in an apartment and it would be hard for her is he can't see.
Until recently there were no treatments for dry age-related macular degeneration, unlike wet age related macular degeneration which has multiple treatments.  There is now a treatment for a type of dry age related macular degeneration called geographic atrophy.  Two new medications were recently approved.   However, they do not improve vision, rather reduce the progression of the disease.  It may also be useful to ask his doctor if there are any other treatable conditions that are impairing his vision such as cataract.  A good review of new treatments for macular degeneration is below
