Dr. Nwogwugwu has more than 19 years working as a public health professional in various health care settings in the United States and Nigeria. She is a researcher, author, and educator. She serves as a principal investigator who integrates mental health into HIV clinics in Imo State, Nigeria through collaborative, task-sharing, stepped care and a capacity-building approach. Her research interest in HIV/AIDS, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and mental health has enabled her to explore the behavioral risk factors among African-American women and the utilization of PrEP, with the Health Belief Model as a framework. She is a member of the Baltimore Social Determinants of Health Taskforce, serving on the HIV Planning Group and the Harm Reduction and IV Drug Use committee, which focuses on ensuring HIV services are available and accessible to all within Baltimore City. She also served as a World Health Organization consultant with the Science and Research Pillar, examining evidence on COVID-19 and advising on health system strategies to address Long COVID/Post COVID. In addition to her work in academia, she is also a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
