(The Grid), in collaboration with the 网红爆料, Baltimore鈥s (UMB) new Intercultural Leadership and Engagement Center (ILEC), recently launched CareerLab 鈥&苍产蝉辫;a virtual workshop series designed to give UMB students, alumni, faculty, and staff valuable skills to enhance their careers.
According to Taylor DeBoer, MA, marketing and operations specialist鈥痑t the Grid, CareerLab was born out of conversations with a graduating student who expressed apprehension about entering the uniquely challenging job market brought about by COVID-19.
DeBoer and Gregory A. Brightbill, MBA, MEd, leadership education and involvement program specialist at ILEC, saw an opportunity to help by combining the Grid鈥檚 mission of entrepreneurial education with ILEC鈥檚 goal of supporting personal and professional development. The joint effort led to the CareerLab series, which was organized through a lens of interprofessional education and leadership.
鈥淭hese are workshops that we feel will be valuable to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members,鈥 DeBoer said of the collaboration, which launched July 29 with a workshop on writing a curriculum vitae, or CV.
鈥淲e have a lot more exciting workshops coming up,鈥 Brightbill added. 鈥淲e're going to go over topics such as diversity and inclusion. We're going to talk about public speaking. We're going to talk about management strategies.鈥
Jennifer Aumiller, MEd, director, Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Career and Professional Development, and director, Office of Postdoctoral Scholars at the kicked off the series with a deep dive into how to write a CV, which as she carefully pointed out, is not the same as a 谤茅蝉耻尘茅.&苍产蝉辫;&苍产蝉辫;
The biggest difference between a CV and a r茅sum茅, said Aumiller, is length. 鈥淎 CV can be as long as it needs to be. A r茅sum茅 is typically short,鈥 she said, noting she has seen CVs as long as 50 pages from experienced researchers.
In contrast to the more exhaustive CV that details how an applicant specifically fits a position, 鈥淎 resume is more like a summary of skills, experiences, and education,鈥 said Aumiller. 鈥淥f course,鈥 she continued, 鈥渢he purpose of both is the same: to get your foot in the door.鈥
Other recent workshops include 鈥淩ethinking a R茅sum茅鈥 with Courtney Jones Carney, MBA, director, ILEC, and 鈥淚nterview Basics" with Jessica Moreno, staffing specialist, UMB Office of Staffing and Career Services.
Future workshops include:
